How do I upgrade my database to SQL Server 2005?

and request that your database to be upgraded to SQL Server 2005. There will be a period of time when your database is not available during this upgrade since the database will be moved to a different server. We will work with you to arrange the best time and to coordinate changing your connection strings at the time of the move.

How much does it cost to upgrade my Dedicated
SQL Server database to SQL Server 2005?
This depends on the support agreement that you have. If you are on an ORCS Web support agreement, the upgrade including licensing, is free of charge. If you have provided your own licensing through a different means, it is up to you to arrange proper licensing. We will be pleased to help with the technical upgrade process in either case.

What level of permissions will my shared SQL Server
user account have?
The primary account will have ‘DBO’ (db_owner) access with a default schema of ‘DBO’.

What tools can I use to manage SQL Server 2005 database?
There are a few good options.
Tools include:
- SQL Server Management Studio
- SQL Server Management Studio Express
- Visual Web Developer Express Edition (free) which includes mature database management tools
- Many 3rd party tools will work with SQL Server 2005
SQL Server Management Studio can be installed independently on a computer running client/server applications that connect directly to an instance of SQL Server 2005
by running the SQL Server 2005 installation and only selecting ‘Client Components’
to install.
The Client Components option installs the following SQL Server features:
- Command prompt tools
- Report Server tools
- Connectivity components
- Programming models
- Management tools
- Development tools
- Books Online
- Sample databases
- Sample applications
SQL Server Management Studio:
SQL Server Management
Studio can be used to manage SQL Server 2005 systems as well as SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 7.0. It cannot be used to manage SQL Server 6.5 or older systems.
A valid license of SQL Server 2005 is required to install the tools.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) provides a graphical
management tool for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) instances.
SSMSE can also manage relational engine instances created by any edition of SQL
Server 2005. SSMSE cannot manage Analysis Services, Integration Services, SQL Server
2005 Mobile Edition, Notification Services, Reporting Services, or SQL Server Agent.
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition:
Visual Web Developer 2005

3rd Party SQL Management Tools:
SQLExecMS is
a program having almost everything DBA or developer needs to work with MS SQL Server

Note: Enterprise Manager cannot be used to manage a SQL Server 2005 Database.

Does ORCS Web support SQL Server 2005 Native
HTTP Support?
Creating, modifying, or dropping HTTP endpoints requires a user to have appropriate permissions. Further, access to endpoints requires authentication. Due to necessary permissions to successfully setup HTTP Endpoints, this feature will not be supported on our shared SQL Servers. However, we will support it on a dedicated or VM server.

Broker?
The minimum level of permissions required for clients to successfully setup and implement Service Broker is beyond the level of support we offer on our shared SQL servers at this time. However, we will support it on a dedicated or VM server.

Does ORCS Web support SQL Server 2005
Database Snapshots?
We will not support Database Snapshots on our shared SQL servers because it is only available in the Enterprise Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. We are currently running SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on our shared SQL servers. However, we will support it on a dedicated or VM Server that has an Enterprise Edition license.

Does ORCS Web support SQL Server 2005 Notification
Services?
Deploying Notification Services instances and maintaining day-to-day operations require administrative permissions, therefore we will not support Notification Services on our Shared SQL servers at this time. However, we will support it on a dedicated or VM Server.

We will not support Analysis Services on our shared SQL Servers. However, we will support it on dedicated and VM servers.

Does ORCS Web support SQL Server 2005 Copy Database
Feature?
To use the Copy Database Wizard, you must be a member of the sysadmin fixed server role on the source server, as well as on the destination server. Therefore, clients will be unable to copy their database using this feature.

Currently, we support SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services on a separate server. We plan to offer SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services in the near future.

Can I get a daily copy of my SQL Server 2005 database backup copied to my website?
Yes you can get a copy of your database backup placed on your website. There is an additional cost of $10/month and a one-time setup fee. Send an e-mail to us at webteam@orcsweb.com
to request a daily database backup.
Note that we do already back up your database to tape daily. Backups to web space is often desired by administrators so that they can keep an offline copy for their own needs.

You can get a backup of your data using the Import/Export feature
of SQL Server Management Studio. Access to SQL Server Management Studio requires
a valid license of SQL Server 2005.

I've been developing and populating my database via Visual Studio, how can I
get my SQL Server database copied to your servers?
You have 3 options to transfer your database to our servers:
- Update the web.config of your application to point to our server and develop using
it directly.
- Develop on your local machine, attach the .mdf/.ldf files to your SQL Server 2005
local installation and then use the Import/Export wizard of SQL Server Management
Studio to copy the data to our servers.
- Send us a copy of your .mdf/.ldf files and we can attach them directly to our SQL
Server, overwriting your existing database.
