Generate MachineKey: A dedicated Windows Server hosting Tool

June 9, 2006

posted by Scott Forsyth

One of our very own, Scott Forsyth, explains below how to create a valid random machine key for your webfarm or single box. Our team is always looking for ways to offer the most tools and resources as your leading dedicated Windows hosting provider. If this tool helps, let us know, we’d love to hear from you.

Run the following tool to create a valid random machine key to place in your web.config or machine.config file.  This is beneficial in a webfarm where all of the server nodes need to have the same machine key, and it is also beneficial on a single box to keep the machine key consistent between IIS recycles and server reboots. The top box provides the <machineKey /> tag while the bottom one shows its position in a simple web.config file.

If you’re set up on a webfarm, or planning to do so, you’re probably well aware that that having a highly available, highly scalable configuration is a non-negotiable for the success of your product or service. Check out our Windows dedicated server sample configurations. Also take a look at our Windows Web Farm Hosting options, or contact our sales team to learn how our architect team can customize the perfect Windows dedicated server environment for your needs.
